Gaspare Manos
Friday, 20 November 2009 - Wednesday, 20 January 2010
BOULAKIA GALLERY presents 30 paintings by the Italian artist GASPARE AUGUSTO MANOS from 20th November 2009 to 20th January 2010 following a series of important recent exhibitions and retrospectives of this artist in Italian museums and public galleries. The son of a diplomat, he has travelled the planet visiting over 100 countries. Born in Thailand in 1968, Gaspare then moves to Kenya for a decade. He learns Swahili, plays with the elephants of the photographer Peter Beard, comes to grip with nature and lets Africa’s humble strength emerge in him. The sunsets, strong light and red earth will forever remain etched in his memory. Gaspare MANOS then moves with his family to Geneva and Athens. In these urban contexts, visits to museums and private collections further stimulate his passion for old masters, contemporary works, as well as Tribal art. Gaspare lives in London where he undertakes a PhD in Economics. He meets the painter Lucian Freud who tells him not to be an “idiot” and concentrate his energy and efforts on painting, as well as the philosopher Karl Popper who defines him as “the immaginifico of contemporary art”. With Popper, Gaspare MANOS discusses issues related to epistemology and phenomenology that have helped and underpinned his research in art ever since. His approach and work interest the American Art critic and historian Alan Jones as well as Rosa Maria Malet, director of the Juan Miro’ Foundation in Barcelona, both of whom contribute to the catalogue of his large URBIS retrospective in Venice in 2008. Writing about him, Malet states “Gaspare Augusto Manos dominates colour, which endows him with the great responsibility of being an heir to the great pictorial tradition of his country.” Boulakia Gallery has chosen a series of important and innovative paintings by Gaspare Manos for this exhibition. These works explain his search for an equilibrium point between figurative and abstract representation of reality not to mention a profound analysis of composition and use of colour.

The Armory Show - The International Fair of New Art
Thursday, 5 March 2009 - Sunday, 8 March 2009
The Armory Show, The International Fair of New Art, is increasing in size and, for the first time in its ten-year history, in range. Long known as the world's leading art fair devoted exclusively to contemporary art, The Armory Show is expanding its current location in Pier 94 to include Pier 92, which will incorporate a new section dedicated to dealers specializing in Modern works. As befits the preeminent art fair in New York, home to more collectors, galleries, critics and artists than any other city, The Armory Show is broadening its spectrum from contemporary art to encompass Modern art. Tha Armory Show is known for presenting works that come directly from artists' studios, but expanding to Modern work opens the door to historically significant pieces.
